At local noontime here in Plant City, winter strawberry capital of the
world, the temperature lingers in the upper 30's with a windchill in the
teens.
For Thursday morning 12/21/00 expect the subfreezing line into the
northern Everglades, with a hard freeze into some areas of the central
peninsula. Look for another buckling of the jetstream and a reinforcing cold
front on Friday 12/22/00, with a more zonal flow and reinforcing cold front
on Christmas Day 12/25/00. The best prospect for a hard freeze deep into the
citrus and vegetable growing areas of south central and south Florida will
exist during the last full week of December.
For the fourth time this fall season subfreezing temperatures decended
across the central peninsula. This time urban and coastal areas also
experienced subfreezing temperatures. The 32 deg. line extended from south
of Ft. Pierce along the east coast, westward through Okeechobee, Lake
Placid, Arcadia and Ona.
At daybreak wind chills ranged from the single digits below zero across
the north and single digits above zero across central. Tentatively the state
cold spot was 16 deg. in Alachua, in the northern fringes of the citrus
industry at the beginning of the 20th century. On the north central
peninsula Ocala had honors at 23, the northern fringe of the citrus industry
prior to 1977. On the central peninsula Brooksville had honors with 23 and
on the south central peninsula Ona had honors with 29, the present northern
fringe of the citrus industry.
