[STORMREPORTS] Florida Winter Weather Discussion

Issued 12/21/00 11:00 AM

Look for another minor buckling of the jetstream and a reinforcing cold
front on Friday 12/22/00, with a more zonal flow and reinforcing cold front
on Christmas Day 12/25/00. Though the period 12/22-12/26 will be
unseasonably cold, the best prospect for a hard freeze deep into the citrus
and vegetable growing areas of south Florida will exist during the last full
week of December.

Issued 12/21/00 10:00 AM

Per Our Forecast

The subfreezing line extended into the northern Everglades this morning.
Even though we had our normal inland radiative drainage wind from the north
at less then 1 mile per hour, west coast and east coast locations had light
onshore flow and stratocumulus, as well as a peninsula wide wind from the
NNE above 1000-2000 feet, versus the normal 3000-4000 feet. This complex
wind flow pattern aided in preventing what would have normally been a
devastating freeze, considering sunset dewpoints were in the teens, by
raising dewpoints in many areas during the night. Also the surface high
pressure center trajectory was across the northern peninsula, intead of the
central peninsula as expected.

Tentatively the statewide minimum temperature for Florida on Thursday
morning 12/21/00 was 18 deg at Alachua, in the non panhandle north. The cold
spot on the peninsula was 22 at Brooksville.

Other notable minimum temperatures were 19 at Cross City, 21 at Crestview
and Tallahassee, 22 at Perry and Gainesville, 23 at Jacksonville, 24 at
Okahumpka, 30 at Dover, 31 at Balm, 33 at Tampa, 35 at Orlando, 38 at Belle
Glade and 41 at West Kendall.
