Tropical Weather Update, July 16, 1997 2:00 PM EDT
The first half of July 1997, has seen more tropical weather activity
than any other July since 1916 when 3 hurricane formed in the first
half of the month. So far this month there have been 3 tropical cyclones
of at least tropical storm strength that have formed.
Tropical Storm Ana, became a TS on July 1.
Hurricane Bill July 11
Tropical Storm Claudette: July 13
The greatest number of Tropical Storms to form in the month of July was in
1966 and 1995 when 4 tropical cyclones of at leat tropical storm strength
formed.
As of today, we could break this record. Today there are 4 distinct
tropical systems in the Atlantic basin.
1. Tropical Depression Claudette is about 560 miles south of
Cape Sable, Nova Scotia. Convection has fired up during the morning, but
this is probably a diurnal effect that has primarily occured with this
storm for the past 2-3 days.
2. A Tropical Depression is probably forming in the NW Gulf
of Mexico. Satellite images and bouys and oil rig data indicate that a
Depression is likely forming and a Recon Flight is on its way to
investigate the area. A tropical storm watch or warning may be issued for
the Middle Gulf Coast.
3. A strong Tropical Wave witha 1013 mb low pressure system
has become better organized 800 miles east of the Lesser Antillies. This
low shows signs of development and sat pics show a nice small tight swirl
with convection near the center and inflowing towrd he center. TThis has a
possibility of becoming a Depression in the next 12-24 hours. A recon
flight is scheduled to investigate the area tomorrow.
4. A tropical wave is located north of Puerto Rico, with
moderate scatterd convection. This system shows no sign of organization at
this time.
In the short term, it looks as if the tropical will be active for the next
several days. With the possibility of atwo tropical deprssions or storms
forming.
In the long term, Dr Gray, may be off unless the remainder of the season
quitets down. This means no more storms in July, only 3 in August, 3 in
September and 1 in October.
