February 3, 2005 5:39 p.m.

A new tropical cyclone has taken shape over the South Pacific
Ocean a short distance to the east of the International Date Line.
Late Thursday afternoon, EST, Tropical Storm Meena holds highest
sustained winds of 40 mph about a center which is 275 miles to the
east-southeast of Pago Pago on the Samoan island of Tutuila. The storm
is moving towards the east-northeast at 10 mph. Meena is forecast to
slowly strengthen on an open-water heading mostly towards to the
southeast during the next 24-48 hours.

Meantime, a new and un-named tropical cyclone is plying the
waters of the eastern South Indian Ocean. Late Thursday afternoon,
EST, this cyclone has top sustained winds of 50 mph. Centered 200
miles south of the island of Mauritius and 225 miles southeast of
Saint-Denis, Reunion, the storm is moving southwestward at 8 mph.
Forecasts call for this cyclone to head over open seas on a bearing
towards the southeast and south during the next 2-3 days.

Thursday, severe cold remained entrenched over portions of
northwestern Canada's Yukon Territory. Old Crow and Dawson registered
temperatures as low as -55 and -57 degrees, respectively. This mark in
Dawson was 35 degrees below the daily mean low in early February. The
reading in Old Crow was 25 degrees below average.

Greater Melbourne, Australia, was pelted by flooding rains this
midweek. Rainfall over the city varied from 5.5 to 6.5 inches in the
48 hours ended Thursday morning, local time. The mean rainfall for all
of February here is a bit less than 2.0 inches, so these downpours
were about three times the monthly average. Nearby, rainfall was 7.2
inches at Stony Point.
