Winchester VA

When I went to bed about 5 this morning the sky was brightening up some
& radar was showing snow to the southwest. I was wondering if it would
snow at some point in the morning and miss it. <G>

I got up about noon, and snow was falling moderately and began covering
the ground about 12:10pm. (Mom said it flurrying about 10am). By the
time I was dressed & got outside to take video, the snow was coming down
the heaviest I have seen in about 2 years!

About 12:50pm, I measured 2". The snow tapered off somewhat after
1:30pm. Light to moderate snow continued until 5pm, with another burst
of heavy snow about 4pm.

The snow was not forecast until this am, then only given a 50% chance of
reaching the ground. And with a high forecasted well into the 30s,
accumulation was not expected.

It was a normal work & school day until the heavy snow began. Roads
quickly became snow covered & slippery. The EMS was busy with wrecks
throughout the county. Interstate 81 was shut down at both ends of the
city by multi vehicle accidents. The one at exit 310 involved 6 trucks.
I heard no reports of serious injuries in my area.

However, there was a crash near Kearnysville WV with a critical injury
about 1:30pm.

Because it was not forecast, VDOT & other highway departments were not
on standby. As a result, it took over an hour to get fully deployed.

A few schools to the south closed early. However, the snow started too
late to dismiss early. Evening activities were cancelled in both the
city & county systems.

The temperature was 36 at mid morning, but fell quickly with the
snowfall in the noon hour. By 1pm, my reading was 31º, but once the
snow ebbed, it was back up to 33º.

At 4:45pm, I measured 3" of snow, which is likely a final total for the
event. One thing was neat... the houses on the north side of the street
did not have to shovel/ blow snow, as the pavement was just wet. Those
of us on the south side had an 1-2" of slush to push from the driveway.

My street became slushy than just wet after a mix of gravel & salt was
applied.

Many roads have refroze now that the temp has dipped below freezing
away. My reading at 8pm is 30º

Temperatures are forecast to reach 40 Friday. With a snow pack & cloud
cover, that might be optimistic. A high of 50 is forecast for Saturday.
That would be nice, but that mean the snow cover would be history.

I took some video & wait to see what kind of news I find on this event.
