Strong snowstorms struck parts of southern Germany,
especially Bavaria as well as parts of Austria and the
Alpine regions.
On Monday January 31st, a strong pressure gradient
developed ahead of an occlusion which brought moderate
to heavy snowfall to srn Germany. The snow was
accompanied by strong winds with gusts up to 40 knots.
Occasionally, there was blowing snow and traffic had
been hampered seriously. Munich airport had to cancel
about 100 flights due to the storm. About 10-15 cm of
snow fell in less than 6 hours in the greater Munich
area with drifts up to 1m and even higher amounts
closer to the Alps.
After a short period of thaw, a second storm struck on
February 2nd. Again, a strong pressure gradient
developed ahead of a warm front, which moved very
slowly southeast. Although winds were less strong this
time with gusts of only 25-30 knots, the amount of
precip was much higher. Some parts of southern Bavaria
got a foot of heavy, wet snow with temperatures at
about 0 to -1°C. Some smaller roads had to be closed
and the airport was again shut down temporarily. The
Munich area received between 20 and 40 cm fresh snow.
Weather services in the city reported the highest snow
since 20 years. Schools in 8 counties ("Landkreise")
were closed for a day. Meanwhile, parts of Austria had
more than 1m of snow with a high risk of avalanches in
the mountains. Some villages could only be reached by
boat or helicopter because the roads were buried under
the snow.
