January 8, 2005 5:08 p.m.

A new tropical cyclone developed over the Indian Ocean Saturday
afternoon, EDT. The cyclone was centered about 275 miles to the
east-southeast of Colombo, Sri Lanka, and had top sustained winds of
30 mph. The system could strengthen over the next few days, and a
landfall on Sri Lanka is possible. Winds may not pose much of a
threat, but there is potential for heavy rain over the next few days
as the cyclone nears the recently devastated island nation.

Saturday, Tropical Cyclone Kerry has winds above hurricane
strength over the Coral Sea. Late in the morning, EST, the
core of Kerry is 520 miles west-northwest of Noumea, New Caledonia.
Drifting towards the southwest at 8 mph, Kerry packs highest
sustained winds of 85 mph. Kerry will likely be over the southern
Coral Sea for the next two to three days.

Saturday, Tropical Cyclone Sally is over the eastern South Indian
Ocean southeast of Australia's remote Cocos Islands. Early Saturday
morning, EST, Sally is 240 miles southeast of the Cocos with 40-mph
top winds. Sally is drifting towards the southwest as 5 mph. Sally
will be away from any land for at least the next two to three days.

High winds swept over Ireland and much of the United Kingdom
Friday night and early Saturday, thence east to southern Scandinavia
in the afternoon. On the island of Man, sustained winds reached 65 mph
at the height of the storm as gusts neared 90 mph. Northeastern
England weathered gusts of 75 to 80 mph in the Tyne-side and Tees-side
metropolises. Leeds and Bradford was rocked by gusts above 70 mph. In
London, gusts were 50 to 55 mph. Ireland clocked 73 mph gusts at
Dublin. On the continent of Europe, gusts were 65 to 70 mph Saturday
in Denmark and northern Netherlands. Worst of the storm, as observed
by weather instruments, was on the oil rigs of the Ekofisk Field in
the North Sea. Midday winds screamed at 87 steady mph with gusts of
107 mph. Denmark took quite the pounding in the afternoon and early
evening. Odense weathered gusts to nearly 90 mph and gusts reached 78
mph in Copenhagen.

Friday, a withering heat wave held fast over Uruguay and the
northern half of Argentina. Much of Uruguay suffered a third-straight
day of 100-degree heat with Salto setting consecutive high of 101,
106 and 104 degrees. Sea-side Montevideo sweltered at 99 degrees.
Across the Plata estuary, Buenos Aires had an inner-city high of 101
degrees Friday. Outlying Ezeiza reached 102 degrees. In northwestern
Argentina, highs were 109 degrees at La Rioja and Santiago del
Estero. Friday night, Catamarca set a low of 87 degrees. Showers and
thunderstorms brought some cooling to the cities of Montevideo and
Buenos Aires Saturday; temperatures in both places remained in the
80s. Farther to the north and west, Saturday brought little relief.
Salto, Uruguay reached at least 103 degrees again. In northern
Argentina, the temperature at La Rioja stood at 105 as of
mid-afternoon, and the temperature had already reached 109 at
Santiago Del Estero. Saturday's high temperatures at both places
could even exceed those set Friday.

Rain ended Friday at Cilacap, Jawa (Java), Indonesia. Rainfall
since Tuesday was about 18 inches.

Northwestern Australia saw temperatures to about 115 degrees
Saturday. Reaching about 114 degrees were Mardie and Marble Bar, in
the state of Western Australia.

Thursday through Saturday were unusually cold over the highlands
of northeastern Turkey. At Erzurum, morning lows were -19, -20 and -19
degrees, respectively. Afternoons of Thursday and Friday had afternoon
highs of 6 degrees. All of these marks were 15-25 degrees below
average.
