Winchester VA

A cold front swept thru the region at midday Saturday, bringing a brief
lull in the April like warmth. A mere .16" of rain fell from Friday
evening to early Saturday morning.

Winds sharply increased behind the front. I was rather surprised, as
previous forecasts had not mentioned strong winds. However, the 4am
Saturday forecast did include "15 to 25mph" winds during the afternoon
hours.

I had a peak wind gust (PWG) of 35mph. The Winchester Regional Airport
had a peak sustained wind of 34mph & a PWG of 44mph.

Out of 25 AWS stations in the northern Shenadoah Valley, 8 had PWG's of
40mph or more. Stronger gusts include:

Winchester (VA) Airport, 44mph
Eastern WV Regional Apt, Inwood WV, 43mph
Musselman MS, Bunker Hill WV, 43mph
Musselman HS, Inwood WV, 42mph

In western & central MD, 16 of 27 stations had PWGs 40mph or greater.
Stronger gusts include:

Middletown ES, 49mph
Crestwood MS, Frederick, 48mph
Brunswick MS, 47mph
Gov. Thomas Johnson MS, Frederick, 45mph

In western Loudoun Co VA, 4 of 8 Leesburg AWS stations had PWG at or
over 40mph.

Catoctin ES 49mph
Loudoun Co HS 44mph

There was no advisories, special weather statements or public
information statements issued for this event. It was apparently confined
to the eastern slopes of the Appalachians & Blue Ridge & basically north
of I-66.

I heard no mention of damage on the police scanners, other than power
outages.

=======
Out west, the latest major winter storm has left it's mark. Several feet
of snow fell in the mountains of CA & NV. Here are 2 links from the
region. I'll try to look for more later today or tonight.
