PEOPLE were rescued from rooftops and cars were swept away in
flood-stricken areas today as Britain was lashed by gale-force winds and
heavy rain. Motorways and minor roads were closed, lorries overturned,
trees were uprooted and chimney stacks were toppled as the chaos spread.

Around 20,000 homes and businesses in the Republic of Ireland had no
electricity as darkness fell, while another 30,000 were powerless in
Northern Ireland after storm-force winds swept across the country.
