Ma-on has become a powerful typhoon over the northwestern
Philippine Sea. Late Thursday afternoon, EDT, Typhoon Ma-on holds
highest sustained winds of 145 mph about an eye which is 270 miles
southeast of Naha, Okinawa, Japan, and 140 miles south of Minami Daito
Jima, Japan. The storm is drifting north-northeastward at 5 mph. Ma-on
is forecast to remain a strong and dangerous typhoon as it accelerates
towards the north-northeast during the next 24-36 hours. On its
projected course, Ma-on will pass over or very near Minami Daito Jima,
thereby brushing the Japan's Ryukyu Islands to the east, then land on
"mainland" Japan on southern Honshu or Shikoku Friday night or early
Saturday, EDT.
Locally excessive rains have swamped the Philippines in recent
days. In southeastern Luzon, for example, Daet was soaked by 21.7
inches of rain from Sunday morning to Thursday night, local time.
The first week of October was unusually warm in much of Europe,
but it was especially warm in relation to normal in Spain. In Cordoba,
for example, Thursday was the sixth day out of seven to register
90-degree-or-high heat; the high was 94. The first three days of the
month saw top marks of 95, 97 and 96 degrees. This abnormal autumn
heat led to an average temperature that was about 10 degrees above the
mean for the first week of October. Albacete also was too warm on
average by about 10 degrees during this time while Cuenca's departure
from the mean was plus-11.
A storm unloaded abnormally heavy rain on Turkey's largest city,
Istanbul, late Wednesday and Thursday. Rainfall was 3.5 inches within
less than 24 hours whereas the mean rainfall for all of October here
is about 3.2 inches.
A tropical cyclone, which had moved into southeast Pakistan early
in the week and weakened, drifted back to the south over the Arabian
Sea the past couple of days. A circulation center has remained and
now the system appears somewhat organized again. There is a
possibility it could regenerate into a tropical cyclone over the next
few days off the west coast of India.
Tropical moisture from the Bay of Bengal that had been soaking
northeast India with heavy rainfall earlier this week has been moving
across Bangladesh since Tuesday. Bogra was doused with nearly 8
inches of rain, while Rangpur had 10.5 inches; 8.7 inches coming in
just 24 hours time.
A strong cold front swept across southern South Africa Wednesday.
Heavy thunderstorms developed just ahead of the front. Capetown had
nearly 2 inches of rain and winds in the wake of the front gusted
past 45 mph. Riversdale had a total of 2.6 inches of rain.
