Over the wide open north-central Pacific Ocean, Tropical Storm
Meranti is weakening and has nearly completed the transition to an
extra-tropical cyclone. Late Saturday afternoon, EDT, Meranti is
centered 820 miles northwest of Midway Island where its top sustained
winds have dipped to 50 mph; it is moving almost due north at 14 mph.
Meranti will continue to weaken and become an extra-tropical storm
during the next 24-36 hours without any interaction with land.
A new tropical depression has come to life over the Philippine
Sea. Late Saturday afternoon, EDT, the depression is centered 630
miles east-northeast of Manila, Philippines. Moving northward at 12
mph, the depression holds highest sustained winds near 35 mph.
Forecasts call for this cyclone to head northward and northeastward
over open waters during the next 2-3 days while attaining tropical
storm, and perhaps typhoon, intensity.
Mumbai, India, also known as Bombay, was soaked by 20.9 inches of
this week rain from Sunday morning to Saturday morning, local time.
These downpours exceeded the mean rainfall for all of August which is
17.3 inches. Flooding in India and Bangladesh this monsoon season has
resulted in thousands of deaths.
It's been excessively rainy lately on the island of Guam, too.
Rainfall Wednesday, Thursday and Friday was 9.7 inches, or about 70%
of the August average. In June, a record-breaking 38 inches of rain
fell here, so it's been quite a wet summer.
On Friday and Saturday, a mass of bitterly cold air swept
northward out of the heart of Antarctica and across the Antarctic
Peninsula and South Shetland Islands, located due south of the
southern tip of South America. Temperatures across the region dropped
from near freezing to near or below zero as sustained winds reached
near 60 mph. Heavy falling and blowing snow were common.
