Over the wide open north-central Pacific Ocean, Tropical Storm
Meranti is rapidly weakening and has begun the transition to an
extra-tropical cyclone. Late Friday afternoon, Meranti is centered 760
miles west-northwest of Midway Island where its top sustained winds
have dipped below 60 mph; it is moving northeastward at 16 mph.
Meranti will weaken and become an extra-tropical storm during the next
24-48 hours without any interaction with land.

Mumbai, India, also known as Bombay, was soaked by 20.4 inches of
rain from Sunday morning to Friday morning, local time. These
downpours exceeded the mean rainfall for all of August which is 17.3
inches.

It's been excessively rainy lately on the island of Guam, too.
Rainfall Wednesday, Thursday and Friday was 9.7 inches, or about 70%
of the August average. In June, a record-breaking 38 inches of rain
fell here, so it's been quite a wet summer.

Mid- and late-week were unusually rainy in parts of New Zealand.
On the North Island, 4.3 inches of rain fell within 48 hours from
Wednesday to Friday, local time, at Hicks Bay. Christchurch, South
Island, was hit by 3.0 inches of rain within 42 hours as of early
Saturday morning whereas only about 2.3 inches of rain fall in an
average August.

A strong cold front swept northward through middle South America
Thursday to Friday instigating dramatic temperature falls. In Mariscal
Estigarribia, Paraguay, for example, Thursday's high was 96 degrees,
but Friday saw afternoon temperatures hovering in the upper 50s
beneath a thick overcast in the wake of the cold front.

Karlsruhe, Germany, saw temperatures climb to 94 degrees on
Thursday. The normal high temperature for the area is 74 degrees.
Temperatures only fell to 71 degrees at night, compared to the normal
low of 56 degrees. The heat continues as the past 3 days have had high
temperatures from 89 degrees or above.

Sura, Russia, saw the temperature on Thursday climb to 83 degrees,
well above the normal high of 66 degrees. This heat has continued over
the past several days also. The heat is also shown in Pinega, Russia,
as the high climbed to 82 for Thursday, once again above the normal
high of 64 degrees.
