Thundery downpours washed the southern Alps in Italy and nearby
Switzerland at midweek. Wednesday to Thursday night, Locarno,
Switzerland, picked up 6.6 inches of rain. The southerly wind flow
that fostered these downpours also triggered hot "foehn" winds north
of the eastern Alps. At Salzburg, Austria, Thursday's high was 90
degrees, or about 15 degrees above average.

Rainfall of late has been heavy to excessive over northern and
northeastern India, Bangladesh and lowlands of Nepal. At Sylhet,
Bangladesh, three-day rainfall as of Friday was 12.0 inches. Rainfall
for the week was more than one foot at Bhairawa, Nepal; Dhankuta
picked up 7.4 inches Wednesday through Friday.

Friday afternoon, temperatures near 100 degrees were reached in
Serbia at Beograd (Belgrade) and in western Romania at Arad.

Rawalpindi, Pakistan, in a thunderstorm Thursday evening, clocked
winds of 70 mph.

Unusually heavy wintertime downpours pelted parts of southeastern
Brazil's state of Parana Thursday and Thursday night. In the east,
Curitiba, the state's capital, collected a little more than 2.8 inches
of rain within 24 hours. July's average rainfall, 3.0 inches, is the
lowest of any month here.

Soaking showers and thunderstorms hit Nangapinoh, island of
Borneo, Indonesia, Thursday to Thursday night. Twenty-four-hour
rainfall was 4.1 inches.

Friday felt as hot as 136 degrees at Al Fujayrah, United Arab
Emirates, owing to temperatures as high as 97 degrees, dew points
largely between 85 and 90 degrees and strong sunshine.
