"FREDERICTON - Eastern Canada has been plunged into yet another deep
freeze, with frigid temperatures all the way from Ontario to Newfoundland.

Some power companies in Quebec are calling on customers to cut back on
their use of electricity. They're afraid they may have supply problems
because of the cold.

Hydro-Quebec has even turned off the illuminated oversized letter "Q" on
the side of its headquarters. The last time that happened was after the
1998 ice storm.

In the Maritimes, communities are dealing with a mix of high winds,
blizzard conditions and extreme cold. It was cold enough on Wednesday to
close most schools throughout New Brunswick, P.E.I. and Nova Scotia.

Travel between the provinces is also restricted.

It was a record-setting day in New Brunswick. Environment Canada's Denys
Allard says the coldest spot is near Edmundston, where the wind chill could
make the temperature plunge to -50 degrees overnight. "There's various
extreme low maximum temperatures that are going to be shattered," he said."
