[STORMREPORTS] Maine Issues State of Emergency Due to Cold

From: Matt Higgs (matt{at}weathersource.net)
Date: Thu Jan 15 2004 - 12:09:33 EST

(Augusta-AP)- Governor John Baldacci has issued a proclamation finding
that cold and wind constituted a civil emergency in Maine. Saying he
meant to facilitate a waiver of federal transportation rules, Baldacci
formally declared a state of emergency.

According to the proclamation, declaring a state of emergency could
have the effect of allowing fuel oil delivery drivers to operate for
additional hours.

That, in turn, could help safeguard public health, safety and
property, as spelled out in the proclamation.

The National Weather Service had wind chill warnings in effect through
Friday morning for Maine and New Hampshire.

-----In other cold news, many schools in Northern Maine,
Caribou/Presque Isle for example, have been closed for a second day
due to cold temperatures. According to a school superintendent this
was the first time it has ever occurred. -----
