The world's top weather headline must be Cyclone Heta, which
became the equivalent of a category-5 hurricane Monday before
weakening slightly late in the day. Late Monday afternoon, EST, the
eye of this violent cyclone is 250 miles south of Apia, Samoa.
Earlier, the storm's eye was within about 75 miles of Savai'i, the
biggest island of Samoa. Highest sustained winds about Heta are 150
mph making it a strong category-4 storm as it churns towards the
southeast at 17 mph. Under imminent threat of a direct hit were two
small islands of Tonga: Tafahi and Niuatoputapu. Beyond these islands,
Heta, forecast to hold its southeasterly tack, would next threaten the
island of Niue, likely Tuesday afternoon, local time.
Meanwhile, the weak Tropical Cyclone Ken ("08S") is off
northwestern Australia. Late Monday afternoon, EST, Ken is 75 miles
northwest of Learmonth, Western Australia. Its top sustained winds
below 30 mph, Ken is headed towards the south-southwest at 4-5 mph.
Ken is forecast to remain weak while heading towards the south and the
southwest for the next two days. Thus, Ken may be near North West
Cape, Australia, by late Tuesday, local time.
Monday, the stretch of consecutive minus-70 mornings reached
three in length at Oymyakon, Russia. Respective lows Saturday through
Monday were 72, 74 and 74 degrees below zero. Coldest daytime,
Sunday, "warmed" only to 70 degrees below zero. What is more, the
temperature Monday evening was back below -70 degrees ensuring a
fourth day in the stretch. Another town at the heart of the Siberian
"pole of cold", Verkhoyansk, early Monday had its first -70 of the
winter thus far.
Puntzi Mountain, British Columbia, Monday had another bitter
start. In the wake of two consecutive lows of -46 degrees, Monday
began down to at least 44 degrees below zero.
Monday, Oodnadatta, South Australia, topped out 116 degrees for a
high temperature. This followed respective daily highs of 115, 117 and
117 degrees Friday through Sunday.
Monday was unusually hot on parts of New Zealand's South Island.
On the east coast, the town of Timaru soared to 91 degrees or about
15-20 degrees higher than average.
Thundery showers brought abnormal January downpours to portions
of central India on Monday. At Bhopal, rainfall was 1.1 inches
whereas the mean monthly rainfall is about 0.7 of an inch.
Rainfall has been excessive lately in parts of Peru. Downpours,
for example, left 5.0 inches of rain within 30 hours Sunday to Monday
at Puerto Maldonado in the southeast.
