"SUVA, Fiji, Jan 5 (Reuters) - Tropical cyclone Heta swept past the South
Pacific island nation of Samoa on Sunday, with winds of up to 170 kmh (105
mph) uprooting trees and bringing down power lines, officials said.
Cyclone warnings were issued for nearby Tonga and the tiny Pacific state of
Niue as Heta continued to move southeast away from Samoa, approximately
4,000 km (2,485 miles) northeast of Sydney.
Australian Broadcasting Corp (ABC) radio said one person had been swept out
to sea and was presumed dead after waves of up to five metres (16 feet)
battered the coast of Upolu island near the capital Apia.
National disaster management official Tau Lealea Usumai Malua said
officials were trying to assess damage but roads had been cut on the south
of the island and no confirmed reports of damage had been received from
Savai'i island, west of Upolu.
The U.S. National Weather Service also issued a tropical storm warning for
American Samoa, to Samoa's east, although no damage had been reported there. "
