QUOTES:

"MADISON, Wis. -- Snow and wind created whiteout conditions that
contributed to two freeway pileups involving more than 60 vehicles Sunday,
resulting in multiple injuries, authorities said.

The accidents happened on Interstate 90 on the east side of Madison.

Police said 44 vehicles were involved in the first accident that happened
at 3:20 p.m., and 17 were involved in a later accident on I-90 about five
miles away.

Hazardous conditions also developed quickly as the snow started elsewhere
in southern Wisconsin during the afternoon.

At Wisconsin 20 and I-94 in Racine County, motorist Nicole LaRussa said the
light snow pushing in from the southwest sent dozens of cars skidding off
the road or into ditches.

Snowfall totals as of 9 p.m. Sunday included 5 inches in Waukesha and West
Allis and 4 inches at Palmyra, Richfield and Beloit. Madison had 3.5 inches
and Milwaukee 3.9 inches.

Low temperatures were expected to drop to zero to five below in the
northwest and to the teens in the south overnight. "
