January 1, 2004 6:18 p.m.

Snow fell Wednesday and Thursday in a swath from Scotland to
France. Beginning Wednesday, a storm packing gales and driving heavy
rains also yielded snow over higher ground in Scotland, and later, in
northern England. The storm left at least 5 inches of snow at
Eskdalemuir, Scotland, and 4 inches at Leeming, England. Winds above 70
mph blasted Fair Isle, one of the Orkney Islands. Wednesday night and
Thursday, snow invaded France. Snowfall of 2 inches whitened Paris
within a few hours. About as much snow also fell over Tours and
Bourges.

Tropical Cyclone Darius continues to churn the South Indian Ocean.
Late Thursday afternoon, EST, Darius is 135 miles north-northeast of
mainland Mauritius. Drifting towards the south at 8 mph, Darius has
highest sustained winds of 70 mph. Darius is forecast to follow a
southerly tack for the next one to two days; such a path would
threaten Mauritius with damaging winds and flooding rains Friday,
local time.

A weak tropical cyclone (07P) is over the South Pacific Ocean
northwest of Samoa. Late Thursday afternoon, EST, the cyclone is 345
miles north-northeast of Wallis Island, and 480 miles northwest of
Pago Pago, Tutuila, American Samoa. Packing 40-mph top sustained
winds, the storm is headed towards the east-northeast at 4-5 mph.
Cyclone 07P is forecast to swing towards the south within the next
day, and it may find its way to Samoa late in the week.

A tropical cyclone has come to life over the Indian Ocean off
northwestern Australia. As of late Thursday afternoon, EST, this new
cyclone holds maximum sustained winds near 30 mph. Centered about 110
miles north-northwest of Broome, Western Australia, the cyclone is
heading westward at 11-12 mph. Forecasts call for the storm to
strengthen on a heading a bit south of due west during the next 48
hours. Such a course would be over open waters.

Heavy rains, some undoubtedly linked to the disturbance which
grew into the aforementioned tropical cyclone, have washed parts of
northern Australia this midweek. In Darwin, Northern Territory,
rainfall was 7.3 inches within 42 hours ended early Friday morning,
local time. In Western Australia Wednesday to Thursday, King Edward
River was pelted by 6.6 inches of rain while Kuri Bay collected 6.0
inches.

In eastern Bolivia, the town of Robore was soaked by 7.1 inches
of rain within 48 hours as of Thursday morning.

Thursday marked the fifth-straight day of widespread, thick fog
over lowlands of southeastern Europe. In Romania, Bucharest was
socked in by fog having visibility down to a few hundred feet with
little or no lifting even in daytime. The fog was prompted by weak
steering winds, a strong stabilizing temperature inversion and snow
cover.

New Year's Day was a hot one over vast swatches of Australian
outback. Hottest was the far west, where Nyang topped out at least
117 degrees. No fewer than 115 degrees was observed at Gascoyne
Junction, and Nullagine saw a high of 114. In South Australia,
Marree read at least 114 degrees by mid afternoon.
