QUOTES:

"Globally, the weather year 2003 was the third-warmest on record, and
20,000 people died in a summer heat wave in Europe. Jon Nese, The Weather
Channel's storm analyst, says that for every record-low temperature set in
the USA this year, there were about four record highs. The year's highlights:

" Snow. The Presidents Day blizzard (Feb. 15-17) dumped 10 inches to 4 feet
of snow on 60 million residents of the Northeast. Eight of the nation's
largest airports shut down. It was the third-largest snowstorm there in a
century. A month later, a blizzard buried Denver in 2-3 feet of snow. And
this month, a significant nor'easter welcomed the new winter.

" Tornadoes. May recorded 516 tornadoes across several heartland states. It
was the largest concentration ever. In another first, Oklahoma City saw
major tornadoes on consecutive days.

" Wetness. Baltimore, Charleston, W.Va., and Greensboro, N.C., recorded
their wettest year on record. Washington, D.C., had its second-wettest.
Much of the rain was due to Hurricane Isabel, which ravaged the
Mid-Atlantic region in mid-September, causing property damage and power
outages for millions.

" Heat. Amid swarms of 100-degree days in numerous cities, it was the
hottest July ever in Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Phoenix and Grand Junction,
Colo. New Mexico had its hottest year, and 2003 was among the 10 hottest
years for nine other Western states.

" Fire. The wildfires in October in Southern California, made worse by
chronic drought, were the largest in state history. They blackened 750,000
acres and killed 22 people. In November and December, deadly mudslides
followed as heavy rains fell on denuded hillsides."
