[STORMREPORTS] 2003-Year of Records

           Baiting Hollow Year 2003 Review

This year was filled with new records. Starting with
the biggest February snowfall recorded in at least the
last decade. The Presidents Day Blizzard dumped 20.0”
of snow here and the winds blew the snow into drifts
that were three to five feet high. The winter over
all was the coldest since I’ve kept records (since
1996), with the lowest temperature on record set in
January at 2º. June brought over 9” of rain, to
become the rainiest June on record and the second
wettest month on record. With the exception of the
only shelf cloud I’ve ever seen and two excessively
humid days (dew points ~80º), summer never came this
year, although August was the warmest on record by a
full 2 degrees. Hail fell twice this year, which is
two more times than in the past ten years! It was the
first time I’ve ever seen hail. I’ve only been in
hail producing t-storms three times. The last time
was in the early 90’s when 1” hail fell, but I wasn’t
allowed near the windows due to excessive lightning…I
was only 10.
A new record rainfall rate of 6.00”/hr. was reached
twice this year. We got a good scare in September
when monster Hurricane Isabel threatened the entire
east coast. (I don’t know about yours, but I don’t
think my house would have withstood the 100mph. winds
with higher gusts she brought North Carolina)
November was only the second month on record with two
50mph. gust days joining December 2000. December was
the snowiest on record with 23.2” and the biggest
blizzard on record in December dumped 17.5” with
drifts up to 3+ feet. December was also the windiest
month on record with 5 days having peak gusts over
40mph. and 16 days with gusts over 30mph. Overall
this was the second wettest year on record at 59.65”
total. There were also many other records set this
year that are far to numerous to list here.
