QUOTES:

"High winds raked South Kona and Ka'u early Monday night, tearing roofs off
at least two homes and knocking out power to thousands.

County Civil Defense Agency officials said damage was limited to the
southwest portion of the Big Island, with the homes losing their roofs in
Hawaiian Ranchos.

Civil Defense Agency Administrator Troy Kindred said another call was
received from a Naalehu resident who said part of their roof was damaged by
the high winds, which were blowing at 50 mph and gusting up to 75 mph,
which is considered hurricane strength.

A National Weather Service official said a combination of a low pressure
system to the west and rising pressure to the east caused the high winds.
The official said the high winds also accelerated as they traveled down the
southwest flank of Mauna Loa.

Hawaii Electric Light Co. reported a tree fell on power lines in Kapua,
South Kona, at 6:19 p.m., interrupting power to about 3,500 customers from
Pahala to Hawaiian Ocean View Estates.

Mauka Kona also experienced a large temperature swing early Monday night
with a low of 59 sometime early Monday morning, and a sudden surge of warm
air which pushed the temperature to a high of 78 in the early evening.

At the summit of Mauna Kea, snow was at least one foot deep, with drifts of
several feet deep, according to Mauna Kea Support Observatories Services.
Snow extended to the 11,000 - foot elevation. Roads to the summit opened at
3:45 p.m. Tuesday, but officials said they would probably be closed this
morning due to icy roads."
