Tropical Cyclone Darius is spinning southward over the South
Indian Ocean. Late Wednesday afternoon, EST, Darius is less than 300
miles north-northeast of Mauritius, and about 50 miles west-northwest
of Saint Brandon. The storm is drifting towards the south-southwest at
6 mph with highest sustained winds of 75 mph. Darius is forecast to
follow a south-southwesterly tack for the next two days; thus, winds
and rains of Darius may be felt in Mauritius later this week.
Wednesday, an alert remained for the possibility of a new cyclone
taking shape west of Samoa, or near Wallis and Futuna Islands, which
is over the tropical South Pacific Ocean near the International Date
Line. Late last week and into early this week, torrential rains
washed the island of Futuna and likely were linked to this would-be
cyclone.
As wind flow was light across southeastern Europe, many
snow-covered valleys have since last weekend been socked in with low
clouds and fog. In Bucharest, Romania, the fog Saturday through
Wednesday limited the visibility to just a few hundred feet.
Rainfall so far this week over Jakarta, Indonesia, is 10.3 inches
at Jakarta Observatory, and 9.3 inches at another site nearby.
At Cayenne, the capital of French Guiana, rainfall was 3.2 inches
within 15 hours on Wednesday.
Soaking thunderstorms and showers unloaded 3.9 inches of rain at
Mariscal Estigarribia, Paraguay, Tuesday night to midafternoon
Wednesday. Of this, 3.0 inches came during a cloudburst lasting six
hours.
