News article:

"National Weather Service blizzard warnings for Maine were downgraded to
winter storm warnings Sunday as a wicked snowstorm along the New England
coast seemed to be calming down, weather forecasters said.

The first winter storm of the season socked many areas with more than a
foot of snow, forcing airport delays and closures for hundreds of miles and
creating dangerous driving conditions.

The storm -- two weeks before the start of winter on December 22 -- has
been blamed for at least eight deaths in five states.

Everett, Massachusetts, just north of Boston, reported 27.6 inches of snow
at 7 a.m. Sunday and Topsville, a little farther north, reported 25 inches,
the weather service said.

Earlier Sunday, NWS spokesman Bill Simpson said high tide Sunday morning
was bringing "major to moderate coastal flooding," wind gusts up to 45 mph
were creating deep drifts and white-out conditions and waves on Boston's
outer harbor were reaching 20 feet.

Saturday's snowfall topped an almost 40-year-old, one-day record in
Hartford, Connecticut, with the total of 12.5 inches crushing the old
record of 6.9 inches set in 1964, the weather service said.

Providence, Rhode Island, also saw a record one-day fall of 8.7 inches,
almost two inches above the old record of 6.9 inches that was set in 1981.

Boston's 11.9 inches of snow Saturday tied its record, also set in 1981.

In New York, Riverdale in Bronx County reported 23 inches of snow; Suffolk
County posted up to 18 inches; and Central Park, 13 inches, according to
meteorologist Wes Junker."
