At noon today I observed convective snow pellet showers in State College
PA, our first winter weather occurrence (earlier than last fall even!)
Snow pellets are snow's answer to sleet -- about the same size but opaque
and made of snow -- little snowballs. According to AccuWeather.com's
Glossary they are 2 to 5mm in size. I talked to a fellow meteorologist who
noted they are likely formed similar to hail but start out as snow rather
than rain, then fall in different sizes depending on how many up-and-down
trips they make, getting more snow compacted onto them.
KUNV University Park Airport has also been reporting lightning with these
convective snow showers for most of the morning although this lightning is
not being reported by the official Vaisala cloud-to-ground network, I am
seeing above-normal-noise-level readings from the WeatherMatrix Lightning
Detectors.

Our wind chill reached 30 degrees this morning and actual temperatures are
forecast near 30 degrees tonight, which would be 16 degrees below
normal. Today's high temperature so far has been 44, which would be 22
degrees below normal if it doesn't rise more.
