[STORMREPORTS] AccuWeather World Weather Highlights Thursday, Oct 02

From: admin{at}weathermatrix.net
Date: Thu Oct 02 2003 - 10:40:00 EDT

October 2, 2003 8:20 a.m.

Early Thursday, EDT, Tropical Cyclone Abaimba, was about 375 miles to
the west-northwest of Diego Garcia in the open Indian Ocean. The
cyclone lost some its punch overnight while encountering wind
shear. Maximum sustained winds are now just 35 mph with gusts to 45
mph. Until the cyclone moves away from this unfavorable environment,
it will probably just remain a weak tropical cyclone. However, some
strengthening is expected again by this weekend. In any case, the
storm should remain over open waters.

The tropical depression, which formed over the eastern Pacific
Ocean Wednesday, has been upgraded to Tropical Storm Nora. Nora,
located about 230 miles to the southeast of Isla Socorro, Mexico.
This is also about 375 miles to the southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico.
The storm has sustained winds of 40 mph and was drifting to the west
at 4 mph. Nora is expected to gather strength over the next 24-48
hours, while tracking more toward the northwest. Mexico's
Revillagigedo Islands might be threatened.

September 2003 was said to be the sunniest on record in England
and Wales, according to the UK Met Office which began keeping
statistics on this matter in 1961. It was also a dry and warmer than
average month. In London, for example, rainfall was only 17% of
average, and the average temperature was 3 degrees above the mean.

Abnormally hot weather reached some of Tunisia's Mediterranean
shores Wednesday. In the northwest, Tabarqa was about 20 degrees
above average in reaching 101 degrees.

The first half of the week saw heavy rains in western Sri Lanka.
At Colombo, two-day rainfall was 6.3 inches.

Downpours Wednesday and Thursday amounted to 3.27 inches in
Vigo/Peinador, Spain. Meanwhile, September ended wet and October
began wet in Lisbon, Portugal. After nearly a month without a drop of
rain, Portugal's capital city had 2.10 inches of rain Wednesday.

The early cold snap in middle Canada spread a hard freeze over
fertile plains of Saskatchewan and Manitoba. At Winnipeg, Wednesday
morning's low, 16, bested a 120-year old record low by two degrees.
As the cold poured southwards, so, too, did unusual warmth bathe
Alaska and northwestern Canada. At Fort Liard, NWT, Tuesday's high of
76 degrees was about 30 degrees above average.

Temperatures soared to 95 degrees Wednesday in Jujuy, in the
Chaco of northern Argentina. The abnormal heat, in just the first few
days of spring across the southern hemisphere, stretched across all
of northern Argentina Wednesday, as well as Paraguay, portions of
northern and western Uruguay and southern Brazil. The hot spot in
northern Argentina was Las Lomitas, where the mercury topped out at
100 degrees. But, the hottest locations in all of South America were in
Paraguay, where Mariscal Estigarribia and Prats Gil both sky-rocketed
to 104 degrees. Artigas, Uruguay, hit 88 degrees, about 20 degrees
above the average for October 1.
