A new tropical depression developed over the eastern Pacific to
the southwest of Mexico on Sunday. Tropical Depression 12E, as of
early Sunday morning, EDT, was centered about 375 miles to the
south-southwest of Puerto Vallarta, and had top sustained winds near
35 mph. The system was expected to strengthen, becoming a tropical
storm later Sunday. A track toward the northwest was forecast, with
little effect on land, except for perhaps a brush with Socorro
Island.
Saturday, fast-moving and fast-weakening former Typhoon Maemi
made a transformation to a new status as a mid-latitude storm. By late
afternoon EDT, the storm was centered over the Tatar Strait near
Sakhalin Island and was moving rapidly toward the east-northeast.
Typhoon Maemi pounded the Korean Peninsula Friday and Friday
night. The eye of Maemi crossed the mainland coast between Yosu and
Ch'ongmu with winds above 100 mph. Eastern and southern South Korea,
even southeastern North Korea, was washed with heavy, sometimes
flooding, rainfall. Amounts of 5 to 10 inches were widespread, and
along the eastern mountain ridge, Kangnung picked up 12.1 inches
within 24 hours; 15.6 inches swamped Taegwallyong. Earlier, the island
of Cheju was struck, and sustained winds of nearly 100 mph were
clocked at one weather station.
Over the past few days, heavy snows have blanketed the
northeastern Alps. In southernmost Germany, the weather station atop
Zugspitze, the nation's high spot, snowfall of two feet was metered.
Atop the Sonnblick, a peak thrust more than 10,000 into the sky of
western Austria, fresh snowfall was 22 inches within two days. Snow
was continuing to blanket both locations Saturday evening, local time.
At this time, snow had also spread southeast to the higher mountains
of Romania and Bulgaria
Abnormal warmth has of late wafted over shores of Canada's Hudson
and James bays. In northern Quebec, Kuujjuarapik set lows of 67
degrees sandwiched about Friday's high of 81. Saturday's high was
fully 30 degrees above average, and the lows were nearly as
anomalous.
