This week's wintry blast in southern Africa culminated early
Thursday in widespread frost and freeze. South Africa set many lows
in the teens. Frankfort and Bloemfontein dipped to 13 degrees. At
Bethlehem, 14 degrees was reached, and lows of 15 degrees were set at
Aliwal and Waterford. At Johannesburg, the Jan Smuts airport hit 19
degrees following Wednesday's chilly high of 46. The daily mean
extremes in temperature here are 47 and 66 degrees for low and high,
respectively. In Botswana, Tshabong was a cold spot with a low of 19.
Thursday, Krovanh had gained the status of a Typhoon over the open
Philippine Sea. As of early morning, EDT, the storm is about 525
miles northeast of Manila, Philippines, with highest sustained
winds of 75 mph. Krovanh is drifting towards the west at 10 mph.
Typhoon Krovanh is forecast to cross open seas towards the west for
the next 24 hours. Afterwards, its forecast path would bring the core
of its high winds and torrential rains into the Luzon Strait near
northern Luzon Island, Philippines, and also to the much smaller
Batan and Babuyan islands.
Wednesday made for three-straight days of 100-degree heat at
Podgorica, Montenegro. Monday through Wednesday, highs were 104, 107
and 101 degrees respectively. The mean high for the time of year is a
bit shy of 90.
Greenland's capital, Godthab, also known as Nuuk, was ripped by
winds gusting 55-70 mph Wednesday into Wednesday night. Rain fell
most of the time.
Snow whitened some of Patagonia early Thursday. On the Chilean
side, snow lay two inches deep at Cochrane and Coihaique. Argentina
had an inch of snow at Ushuaia, on Tierra del Fuego, and also at the
northern Patagonian town, Bariloche.
