QUOTES:
"Eleven states east of the Mississippi River have set records or
near-records for the past three months' rainfall. Floods have brought
death, damage and plenty of frustration. Cheered last year as relief to the
long-running drought, the rain is now cursed by the rained-upon.
Florida registered 37.2 inches of rain from January through July. That's
about 6 inches above that period's average. But the June-to-November
hurricane season is just entering its peak. Sodden residents from the
Sunshine State north worry about the potential for even heavier rains.
Alabama's record rainfall 23.9 inches from May to July, about 75% above
normal may hasten extinction of the vermilion darter.
First weakened by drought, now undermined by rain, large trees have fallen
and crushed several people this summer.
On a small farm in Amherst, Va., lightning killed nine cows a third of the
herd as they crowded together under a tree during a thunderstorm.
In the nation's capital, 23.1 inches fell from May through July, almost
double the average of 11.8 inches.
In summer gardens, the lilacs are drowning. Tomatoes have blossom rot.
Golfers dodge raindrops. Barbecue chefs huddle under umbrellas. Storm
waters threaten fishing."
