"By MICHAL LUMSDEN, Staff Writer

Monday, August 18, 2003 -- Wind gusts and heavy rain swept through western
Massachusetts Saturday afternoon, knocking down trees and utility lines.

The storm started around 2:30 p.m. and lasted for about half an hour. In
that time, however, thousands of customers lost electricity and trees and
branches fell throughout Amherst, Hadley and Northampton.

One of the larger trees that fell during the storm lay in front of the
Autumn Inn, 259 Elm St., Northampton. General Manager Jeffrey Hoess said
the tree knocked down some cable lines, but the electricity was still working."

Michael Jackson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service,
estimated winds at between 45 and 58 miles per hour, but he did not have
very specific data on the storm, since it was so brief and passed between
two weather stations.
