Rains triggered by the dying Etau, formerly a typhoon, pelted
some of Russia's vast far east. In the island of Kunashir, rainfall
was 4.4 inches within 24 hours. At Kozyrevskoye, off the southern tip
of Kamchatka, rainfall of 4.8 inches was linked indirectly to Etau.
A strong and long-lived easterly wave has unleashed heavy rains
over west Africa. In Senegal, two-day rainfall was 6.9 inches at
Matam, and 5.9 inches at Ziguinchor. At Matam, where August is
normally the wettest month, the two days brought one-third of the
average yearly rainfall.
The eastern North Pacific Ocean held two named tropical storms as
of early Sunday morning. Tropical Storm Guillermo was more than 1150
miles west-southwest of Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico,
packing highest winds slightly above 50 mph. Guillermo drifted
westwards at 14 mph. The storm was forecast to head westward over
wide-open seas, perhaps weakening.
The over North Pacific storm, Hilda, was upstream of Guillermo.
Early Sunday morning, EDT, Tropical Storm Hilda was about 700 miles
southwest of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Hilda was heading towards the
west-northwest at 14 mph with highest sustained winds of 40 mph. Hilda
was seen first to strengthen, and later weaken, while heading mostly
towards the west over open seas.
Hot weather spanned much of western Europe again on Saturday with
the core of this heat remaining over France. Highs above 100 degrees
were common in France with the 104-degree marks at Bourges and Gourdon
at the top of the list. Greater Paris reached 97-99 degrees. In
Germany, Karlsruhe spiked to 104 degrees. Frankfurt, Wurzburg and
Trier registered highs of 100-102 degrees. Notable hot spots in the
southwestern corner of the continent included Cordoba, Spain, at 105
degrees, Castelo Branco, Portugal, at 103, and Braganca, Portugal, at
102. Northern Italy had 100-degree afternoon heat at Piacenza, Verona
and Firenze. In the United Kingdom, temperatures reached the 90s as
far north as the English Midlands. London's Heathrow airport set a
high of 95 degrees; this was the second time in 4 days to reach this
mark. In northern Scotland, Kinloss reached 88 degrees.
Sunday afternoon, local time, record-setting heat is underway in
eastern and southeastern England. Temperatures are above 95 degrees
in greater London, and in the eastern Midlands at Cambridge, to name
a few.
Here are a few temperature highlights from this week in the United
Kingdom. England's hot spot, Gravesend, Kent, reached 36.4 degrees
Celsius, or 97.5 degrees Fahrenheit. This was UK's highest temperature
since 1990, when Cheltenham registered 37.1 degrees C, or 98.8
degrees F. Wisley, Surry, reached 97 degrees for its all-time high.
Also reaching an all-time high mark was Valley, Anglesey, Wales, with
91.4 degrees.
