An unusually strong and latitudinally deep 500 mb eastern U.S. summer trough and it's attendant 500 mb shortwave impulses, in conjunction with a tropical plume of moisture from the eastern Pacific Ocean, is creating yet another day of flooding rainfall on the Florida peninsula. Many areas have seen 10" of rainfall in the past 5 days, with some areas exceeding 15". Severe weather in the form of an outbreak of funnel clouds, water spouts and even some F1-F2 tornadoes have occurred during the period.
These rains come on top of near normal rainfall in July 2003 and record rainfall of 15-30" in June 2003. Needless to say all peninsula rivers are near or above flood stage. What's amazing is seeing water in lakes that had been dry for 20 to 40 years previous to 2002. What's sad though is seeing many homes flooded out far from rivers and lakes, having been built in subtle low spots that at one time were naturally wet hammocks or swamps before the bulldozers showed up.
After a three year drought that began in the fall of 1998 and did not end until June 2001, thanks to a strong La Nina, Florida experienced a devastating drought and horrendous wildfires. However Florida has now seen above normal rainfall now for 14 of the last 15 months, the exception being the colder then normal January 2003.
If the tropics get into the act 2003 may go into the history books for record flooding.
