"Flood waters in Papua New Guinea have swept away bridges, homes and food
gardens, leaving hundreds of villagers homeless.
The Ramu Valley, located 500 kilometres north of the capital Port Moresby,
has been pounded by ten days of torrential rains. Barter said torrential
rains had gutted mountain sides washing away bridges, power pylons, a
community school and a clinic.
Apart from the bridges, the Saussi mission station has been devastated, the
entire community school has been washed away along with many buildings,
including a clinic, belonging to the mission, Barter told local media. The
main highway between Lae and Madang had also been cut off after a bridge
was swept away.
Barter said a hydro-electricity scheme had to be shut down after two power
pylons collapsed. The town of Madang - the country's most popular tourist
destination - was now being powered by an old diesel power station, he said."
