"PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, March 19 (Itar-Tass) -- The powerful cyclone
which brought gale wind and heavy snow to the south of the Kamchatka
peninsula is gradually subsiding, weathermen said Friday.

On Thursday gale wind reached the speed of 44 meters per second near the
settlement of Ozernaya in the southwest of the peninsula. In a nearby
district the snowfall brought 70 percent of the monthly precipitation norm.
The settlement of Oktyabrsky with a population of 2,000 was completely cut
off from the rest of the world as the only road leading to it was covered
with 1.5 meters of snow and the visibility was reduced to nothing.

In Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky school classes were cancelled.

In the Sea of Okhotsk a storm was reported with wind reaching the speed of
up to 30 meters per second.

However the central Yelizovo airport, which was closed Thursday, reopened
Friday."
