"Two people were injured at a football match today after high winds sent an
advertising hoarding crashing into the crowd.

Winds gusting up to 75 mph in the north east of England and 45 mph across
southern areas caused havoc, with sporting fixtures cancelled, speed
restrictions imposed on motorists and vulnerable bridges forced to close.
Further north, speed restrictions were put in place on the higher parts of
the A628 between Tintwhistle and the Woodhead Reservoir in Derbyshire.

In Wales, the Old Severn Bridge was closed due to the winds, while the
Britannia Bridge in north west Wales was also closed to lorries and
high-sided vehicles. Ferries across the Irish Sea also suffered as a result
of the weather, with the 9am Stena Line ferry from Rosslare, just south of
Wexford, still unable to leave port.

A spokeswoman for the RAC issued advice for motorists in the high winds
after receiving a 20% increase in the number of emergency calls. She said
4,500 calls had been made today: "Although it is difficult to tell what
they are all for, it is partly attributable to the winds.""
