Saturday, Tropical Cyclone Fay is a strong storm over the Timor
Sea near northwestern Australia. Saturday afternoon, EST, Fay is just
over 300 miles north-northeast of Broome in the state of Western
Australia. Drifting westward-southwestward at 5 mph, Fay now packs the
punch of 115-mph sustained winds. Kay could still strengthen markedly
so long as it remains clear of land, which it is forecast to do for
another day or two.
Also Saturday, an un-named tropical storm is near the eastern
Philippine Archipelago. Saturday afternoon, EST, the storm is centered
about 70 miles north-northwest of Catanduanes Island. With 40-mph top
sustained winds, the storm is drifting towards the north-northwest at
7 mph. This weather maker is forecast to skirt the eastern side of
Luzon Island, the bulwark of northern Philippines, and then to swing
towards the northeast and open seas.
The latest outpourings of tropical rain ended Friday night at
Cairns, Queensland, Australia. Three-day rainfall was about 16
inches, and for the month thus far, 33.5 inches. For all of March,
17.6 inches of rain would fall on average. Far-northern Queensland
also got a soaking beginning Wednesday. Weipa picked up 8.4 inches
within 24 hours ended early Saturday, and 12 inches over a
three-day's stretch.
Saturday, spring "jumped the gun" throughout Ukraine. In Kiyev,
the 68-degree mark was reached, making it 30 degrees above average
for the date, and more fitting of a day in mid May. A warm spot in
the eastern European land was Mohyliv-Podil's'kyy, near the Moldova
line, were 75 degrees was reached. Other parts of southeastern Europe
will similarly warm, with high temperatures in the 70s registered
throughout the lower elevations of Romania and Bulgaria.
Much of northwestern Mexico away from the Pacific coast and the
Sierra Madre Occidental has sweltered this week. In Sonora, daytime
readings in the upper 90s have been registered daily in the city of
Hermosillo. Friday was no different -- the temperature was near 100
degrees by early afternoon, local time. Choix, in the neighboring
state of Sinaloa, topped out 101 degrees.
Friday saw gales rip much of England and Wales as well as parts of
Ireland. Gusts reached 65 mph on England's Isle of Man in the Irish
Sea and were above 60 mph at Tees-Side and, in Wales, at Valley.
Highest gusts were 50-55 mph in many other spots in England, including
Liverpool, Leeds, Bradford, Humberside, Cranfield, and Biggin Hill, a
site just 12 miles southeast of central London. Moderate rain
accompanied the strong winds. Saturday, a fresh blast of high wind
off the open Atlantic Ocean targeted Ireland. Gusts reached 60 mph in
Dublin, and more than 65 mph at Shannon.
