Late Friday into Saturday, a blizzard swept northern and eastern
Iceland unleashing hurricane gusts, heavy snows and blinding
whiteouts. Snowfall at Dalatangi was about two feet, and it was driven
before steady winds of 50-55 mph. Egilsstathir clocked gusts between
65 and 70, and visibility dipped at times to 100 feet.
The first six days of the month have been striking for their
abnormal warmth over the heart of northern Europe. Most of Germany,
Poland and Czech along with Netherlands, Belgium and northeastern
France were warmer than average by 15 to 20 degrees. Hannover,
Germany, topped their mean temperature for the stretch by 20.7
degrees. Saturday, "normal" chill began to retake northwestern
Europe, and in answer, spring-like warmth shifted eastwards and
southwards. Warming to 61 degrees versus a daily average high of 36,
Vienna, Austria was buffeted by gusts of 45-50 mph.
Balmaceda, Chile, chilled early Friday to 32 degrees, yet less
than 12 hours later, it reach 91 degrees -- 59 degrees in one
summer's day! Still not through with its wild swings in temperature,
the site early Saturday registered a low of 36. For the record, the
monthly average high at Balmaceda is 64 degrees, and the low, 43.
Drenching rains hit parts of Queensland, Australia, during the
second half of the week. At Cairns, about 11.9 inches of rain fell
within 42 hours ended Friday afternoon, local time. February lies at
the heart of the rainy season here. The monthly average rainfall is
17.6 inches.
A long-lasting and heavy snowstorm struck eastern Russia's
Poluostrov Kamchatka (Kamchatka Peninsula) at mid- and late-week. One
site, Petropavlovsk Kamchatskiy, saw its snow depth rise 32 inches
from 23 to 55 inches within 48 hours as of early Friday, local time.
Liquid equivalent from the storm was 2.1 inches.
