Here in sunny Florida the land of the outstretched palm, we are on day
seven of very warm December weather, thanks to the 596 dcm high block to our
east, with two more to go before reality begins to set in. Daily max temps.
have been running in the low 80's with min temps. in the mid 60's to low
70's. Record books show this to be the warmest period in any December since
December 1962, when a brutal arctic invasion ended that run of warmth and
permanently pushed the northern edge of the citrus industry south of Ocala.
In 2000 the northern edge of the citrus industry is south of Lake Placid,
thanks to numerous arctic outbreaks between 1976 and 1996.
We have a decent chance of rain Saturday into Sunday and then cooler air
arrives for Sunday the 17th. The motherlode of arctic air begins to arrive
on Wednesday the 20th and it appears that several surges may be busting
pipes through 1/7/01.
Per my winter weather outlook first issued back on 10/1/00, the month of
January as a whole will be colder then normal. Back on 11/26/00 I forecasted
colder weather by 12/15/00, so am going to be off by two days. :<)) For more
details see my Florida Winter Weather Discussion site at
http://giellaweather.tripod.com .
For you folks in Texas, I lived in Houston from 1983-88 and know just how
cold it can bet there in the area. I saw snow and sleet with subfreezing
high temperatures every year, not to mention Hurricane Alicia.
