Ice Storm!!

An ice storm that totalled .93" melted ended about 6am Thur. The 1st
band of light freezing rain fell in the 8pm hour Wed evening, causing
over 2 dozen accidents in my county, including about a dozen on
interstate. Only a few w/ minor injuries were reported.

A local freeway that connects the west & east sides, was closed for an
hour until salt trucks arrived. The freeway is on a hill & there is a
bridge to cross RR tracks. A car slid down the road, sliding thru 2
several year old trees.

The story near Lexington, VA was different, as multi vehicle accidents
closed down I-81 for a time.

Most schools were closed Thur, the local city schools went in 2 hours
late.

WX Thur 12-14-00
Moderate sleet began about 11pm Wed, and lasted until 1am, At 1am, heavy
to moderate Freezing rain fell until 6am. Temps fell to 27 during the
sleet, then rose to 31 & maintained the ready until about 8am.
Ice glazed trees to about 1/3" thick, and the ice was 1" thick on the
ground.

Here is my photopoint album:

The sky was partly sunny. Most of the ice melted by dusk but shaded
areas had trace to 1/4" left. The low was 27 at 12:17am, and a high of
41 at 3:45pm. Low windchill was 18, at 1:28am, & a pwg of 19mph at
4:10pm.

This ice remained Fri am (protected by the shade of pine trees). I
noticed that plowed ice in parking lots remains in piles under 1 foot
deep. (Local highway DOT's did not plow much or at all, figuring
afternoon temps would melt the slush quickly)

More ice is due between 4am & noon Sat, perhaps 1/4" thick, (at 9pm, the
temp was steady at 30)

WX Fri 12-15-00
It was mostly cloudy in the am, becoming partly sunny in the afternoon.
A low of 29.5, and a high of 39.5. The PWG was 16mph causing a low
