Severe Thunderstorms
Apr. 21, 1997

Early on the morning of Monday, Apr. 21, 1997, the NWS in RDU issued a statement noting a slight risk of severe thunderstorms over North Central NC in the afternoon. Much to everyone's surprise, the real weather developed in SE NC and NE SC shortly after 4pm. Later more severe thunderstorms developed near the Triad and moved east through the Triangle.

Member J. Ferrell tracked the storms in SE NC, then again back near HQ in Raleigh, NC.

The main damage occuring from storms that evening was an abundance of hail: large hail and small hail covering the ground. In an unrelated storm west of Greenville, SC, baseball sized hail was reported in the evening.
