Netscape Navigator Gold 3.01 : Tips and Tricks
After using Netscape Navigator Gold 3.01 for the last few months,
I have come up with a few suggestions, tips and tricks that may help you
quickly master the tool. None of this stuff is written in stone, so e-mail
me if something appears to be wrong or you have any questions.
Definition: The Version of Netscape 3.01
which contains HTML editing capabilites.
Download: The Netscape Navigator 3.01
Gold is downloadable from Netscape
.
Handbook: First of all, read through
the Manual
if you haven't. It gives a basic tutorial, and also mentions some limitations
and problems. You may want to read it before you read The Real Story,
it'll make more sense.
Tutorial: Click here
for a quick, unofficial Tutorial.
The Real Story: Now here's what they don't tell
you in the Manual:
- Save often. Although 3.0x Gold crashes
much less often thatn 2.0x did, it will get you when you least expect it.
- When editing a page on a remote server: Don't
download images. When you save a page, uncheck the "Save Images
with Document." Otherwise it will try to reupload the images
when it publishes which will take a long time. Also, it will change the
location of the images to the same directory of your downloaded pages,
which will cause the images to not load or load incorrectly when you publish.
- When editing a page on a remote server: Beware
HEIGHT= and WIDTH=. As far as I can tell, Netscape automatically
appends these tags to each image tag when the HTML is saved, and there's
no way around it. This is usually a good thing for normal images,
but if the image is going the change at all (good example is a counter
image which will change size depending on the number of hits) this is a
very bad thing. In the latter case, the image will appear distorted when
Netscape attempts to resize the image in the HTML.
- When uploading a page on a remote server: Specify
//fullpath in the URL. Netscape gets really particular about the
Publishing Location. I have found that in some cases the only way to get
it to work is to give it the full path from the root of the server with
the first slash of the root directory included, such as:
ftp://machine.name.net//root/path/to/my/public_html/
Notice the two slashes after the machine name.
- Always check your results on another computer.
I did a project with Gold a couple of months ago, and upon viewing
the final product it looked fine. Turns out it only looked fine on my
specific computer. Reason: Netscape Gold had assigned image tags like
this to some of the images: file://C|\Projects\blah.gif
instead of just blah.gif. Therefore,
the images would not show up unless you happened to have a blah.gif in
your c:\projects\ directory on your hard drive, which of course no one
would except for me. It was totally invisible to me, however, that the
problem even existed, until I switched viewing computers.
- WYSIWYG? Not quite. According to the manual, "invalid HTML may
cause the editor to display differently than the browser." Well, I've
created HTML with Gold that looks different in the editor and the browser.
Word to the wise: check the browser window to
see what it really looks like.
