Subject: March 8 Severe Weather
This past sunday was one to remember with the Southeast part of North
Carolina, the same area which has had flooding problems and also was the
site where both Hurricanes Bertha and Fran came to shore at, recieveing some
Tornadoes which caused some minor injuries and some mobile homes to be
destroyed. The Storm Predictions Center issued the Tornado Watch, earlier
that day for eastern North Carolina nad eastern South Carolina. While I
believe its not a good idea to contact the Weather Service Office unless you
have a report to give during these times, this storm caught me with my pants
down. I contacted the weather service office in NEwport and asked what they
thought was the best chance of getting hit the worse by this storm. Of
course as usual the reply came back as Duplin County. Now while Duplin
County seems to be a magnet for severe weather, I never made it from the
house. As I was about to leave to go to Duplin County to support the
doppler Radar through my SKYWARN duties, my sister asked me a question which
caught my attention, What if was the beginning of this question, and i went
into thinking mode big time. The question she asked me was What if the
storm develops to be stronger then anticipated by the weather service and it
hits home? Now she had me thinking, how would i feel if my family and
friends couldn't depend on me for my reports from my own county because I
went to another county to be the eyes on the ground for the national weather
service. While it was a tough decision, I choose to stay home and watch the
storm from here. While it was quite powerful, it got me thinking to why do
we participate in SKYWARN? What is the real reason you participate? Is it
because of your family and friends? IS it because you want to do a public
service for your community? What is your reason? The next time we have
severe weather, remember that reason, and remember, just because you do
participate in SKYWARN, it may just be you that sees what someone else won't
see and your report that saves lives in your respective county.
I apologize for rambling on, but I finally realized the real reason I
participate in SKYWARN.
Sincerely yours,
Chris
