Here are the latest storm reports from Members about the East Coast
Storm:

0. State College - PA : Member Jesse Ferrell :
My area has been in an unbelieveable dry slot all day and this evening
snow and rain surround us but I haven't even a trace yet. If you've
been watching TWC this evening you've seen Jim Cantore, who is a not
far from here, wondering why he's broadcasting with nothing to show. I
think there is a possibility that I could get through this whole system
without significant snowfall, looking at the radar and satellite. This
is one of those storms that embarasses the weather forecasters (myself
included), leaving Snowplows sitting in the moonlight on the PA
Turnpike. However the NWS is still sticking with 8-12" here, with
possible thunder tonight and blowing and drifting snow tomorrow. TWC
has been decreasing its estimates all day, from over 12" last night to
3-6" this evening. Personal AccuWeather cut their predicted snowfall
for me from 12" to 5" during the day today. So we'll have to see, but
being trapped in between the two main precipitation areas isn't looking
good. If it doesn't snow soon I'm going to scream! No offense NC
Members, but I could get more snow than this in NC! ;)

1. Mulberry, NC : Member Jesse Ferrell
Contacted my relatives in Mulberry, NC, who report 6-7" of snow today.

2. Baltimore-Washington : Member David Rundle:
It's dicey here - the temps. are hovering just above freezing here in
Annapolis, MD but no precip. yet. It's gone from partly sunny at 8:30
this morning to fully overcast and the cloud deck is lowering just a
bit. I imagine that the western mountains of MD are going to get
between 6" to 10" before this whole thing is over, but in my area, the
Chesapeake Bay will keep things just warm enough to leave us in Central
MD with a real mess... That funky microclimate!

3. Chapel Hill, NC : Member Cliff Nelson:
Well folks, it's 1:23 PM here. Rain started around 10:00, and nothing
but
occasional light rain has fallen here today. Current temp is 36.
I gotta tell you, with all those snow reports coming from Greensboro
just
to my west, I'm feelin' perdy ripped off! We'll see what the wrap-around
does tonight.

Chapel Hill, NC
The rain here began mixing with sleet 10 minutes ago, and the precip has
become increasingly wintery these past few minutes. At 2:00 it's sleet
mixed with snow.
I noticed an interesting trough-like feature on the 18Z surface plot,
with
NW winds in GSO and NE winds in Raleigh. I assume this change-over
coincides with that trough, and that its passing signals the end of any
chance for heavy precip. Bummer. But at least I'm getting *something.*
:)
Now it's 2:05. Mostly snow at this point, with just a hint of that old
familiar sleet "sizzle" still out there. And the front yard is already
tinting white! Aahhhhh...
15-minute changeover process.

4. Greensboro, NC : Member Dennis Meredith:
At 1500 local, snow has stopped falling at the weather office here in
Greensboro. We currently have 30 degrees with blowing snow. We have
between 4 and 5 inches of snow on the ground. Pressure is quite low
at this time (29.43" and still falling) with winds gusting to about
20 knots. Now I get to try and drive in this stuff!
I will send observations from home this evening...
Looks like we could get some additional snow as the upper-level
system approaches from the west...

As of 5 pm today (12/29/97) we have gotten 2" of snow with the radar
showing more heading toward NE Ga. in the next few hours. We could
receive another 1 inch by the end of the storm. The temp is now 31 and
hasnt been above 32 all day. The southern end of my county had around 1"
early today, most of it melted and additional snow fell leaving only
wetness behind, the temp there reached around 35° by afternoon.
