World Weather Summary
Updated: August 13, 2005 8:46 a.m.
An active southwest monsoonal flow continues to affect
the Philippines. In the 24-hour period ending at 5am EDT
Saturday, Vigan had 4.58 inches of rain, Laoag had 2.97
inches, Iba 5.69 inches, Baguio 4.89 inches, Manila 2.18
inches, Cubi Point 6.06 inches and Sangley Point 2.15 inches.
All of these sites are over the northern Philippines. In
some areas, three day rainfall totals have exceeded 12
inches.
A deep and thick haze of smoke has covered much of
Malaysia over the past week from forest fires in
Indonesia. The smoke filled air has caused much discomfort
amongst the residents of Malaysia with school closures,
flights being grounded and delays in shipping materials.
In addition, the smoke has caused a series of health
concerns from the rise in people suffering from asthma,
to sore throats and irritated eyes. Winds shifted to the
south and southeast in some areas Saturday pushing the
thick layer of haze and smoke off to the north. At Kuala
Lumpur, the visibility improved to over 9 miles Saturday
after hovering between 1 and 1 and a half miles Friday.
Hurricane Fernanda as of midday Saturday was located over
the open Pacific Ocean, about 1/3rd of the way between the
Mexican coastline and Hawaii. Fernanda was moving west at 8 mph
with top winds sustained at 80 mph. Fernanda has probably
peaked in strength and will likely weaken over the next few
days as it moves over slightly cooler waters. Although it
will continue moving toward Hawaii, it is no threat to the
island chain some 1500 miles to the west.
Tropical Storm Greg weakened a bit in the past 24 hours,
but may begin to regain strength later in the weekend. As of
midday Saturday, top winds were sustained at only 40 mph with
gusts to 55 mph. Greg is more than 600 miles off the coast of
Mexico and will continue to move west, away from the coastline
over the next several days.
Tropical Storm Sanvu made landfall Saturday near Shantou, China.
Winds at landfall were estimated to have been sustained at 65 mph
with gusts over 80 mph. As of Saturday midday, Sanvu was still a
tropical storm with winds of 40 mph and was located near 24.4 north
and 115.5 east about 250 miles north to northeast of Hong Kong.
Movement was to the northwest at 10 mph. This storm will weaken to
a tropical depression Saturday night, but can still produce flooding
downpours well inland over south central China Sunday into Monday.
Tropical storm Irene is slowly gathering strength as it passes
by to the west of Bermuda Saturday. As of midday Saturday, winds
were sustained at 70 mph, just under hurricane force with gusts
to 85 mph. Irene will pass about 300 miles to the west of Bermuda
later Saturday, then recurve to the north and northeast early next
week before reaching the United States mainland. Irene will likely
reach Category 2 Hurricane strength by Monday with winds of 100 mph
as it passes by about 150 miles to the east of Cape Hatteras, North
Carolina. Rough surf will effect east coast beaches from northern
Florida to New Jersey the next several days.
