        World Weather Summary
Updated: August 3, 2005 10:35 a.m.
Late Wednesday morning, EDT, Typhoon Matsa is over the western
Philippine Sea. Centered about 325 miles south-southwest of Naha,
Okinawa, Japan, and 340 miles southeast of Taipei, Taiwan, Matsa has
highest sustained winds of 85 mph; it is moving northwestward at 7
mph. Matsa is forecast to move towards the north-northwest and to
strengthen somewhat during the next 48-72 hours. On this projected
path, the storm's core would pass over the Sakishima Shoto of Japan's
southern Ryukyu Islands Thursday, but strong, potentially damaging
winds and heavy rain would extend to parts of Taiwan and perhaps to
Okinawa. Thereafter, Matsa will probably move over the East China Sea
and could threaten eastern mainland China during the weekend.

Portions of southern South Korea were pelted by heavy rain Tuesday
to Wednesday. One especially rainy place was Chonju, where 10.1 inches
of rain fell within 12 hours. Andong collected about 6.6 inches within
a little more than 24 hours.

Ratnagiri, India, was flooded by 16.4 inches of rain within 78
hours ended midafternoon Wednesday, local time.

Tripoli, Libya, soared to 111 degrees Tuesday, then the
temperature spiked to at least 110 on Wednesday. These readings are
about 15 degrees above average.

Portions of South America's midsection have been unusually warm,
even hot, during recent days. In Asuncion, the Paraguayan capital,
for example, the mean temperature from Friday through Tuesday was
more than 14 degrees above average. Each of these five days had a
high temperature in the lower 90s whereas the average high at this
time of the year is in the middle 70s.

The weather may have played a role in the crash of an Air France
jet at Toronto's Pearson International Airport in Ontario, Canada,
Tuesday afternoon. Around the time of the incident, there was a heavy
thunderstorm over the airport which unleashed wind gusts to almost 40
mph. Rainfall was a little more than 1.4 inches between noon and 6 pm,
local time.
