For those that missed it, Comedy Central did a hilarious spoof of
Hurricane Dennis coverage by the news networks. It was seen on The Daily
Show, which satirizes current or recent news events.
If the show is rebroadcast in normal sequence, it can be seen again
tonight (Thur 7-14) at 7pm, 11:30pm and 1:30am, all Eastern. It is in
the first part of the program.
======
Wednesday was the 2nd soupy day (humidity wise) in the mid Atlantic.
Some dewpoints (Td) were near 80º Wednesday afternoon. My high Td was
77º, the day before it was 76º.
Thunderstorms were scattered both days, and many were heavy rain
producers.
I mowed the grass for the first time in 5 weeks Tuesday. When I started,
the heat index was 95º. I worked as quickly as possible. The NWS had
raised the chance of thunderstorms for Tue afternoon from 20% the night
before to 50% in the afternoon forecast. The nearest thunderstorm was 15
miles west and rained itself out before reaching my location.
Yesterday, thunderstorms began forming before noon. A cell formed some
30 miles south about 1pm and it's outflows developed new storms
northward. About 2:30pm, clouds were building here. By 3pm storms were
developing west, south and east of town, and moving very little.
They also produced vivid lightning displays. Thunder rumbled nearly non
stop for 2 hours. It was so intense even I did not go out to watch or
take video, even though most of it was at least 5 miles away. WINC radio
reported 1.00" of rain. Myself, 5 miles away, measured a mere .03".
The NWS issued a severe thunderstorm warning for my county & Clarke Co
(just east) for about 30 minutes Wednesday afternoon. There was one hail
report (3/4" diameter) from the storm in Clarke Co.
Baltimore Washington NWS issued 4 flash flood warnings & 3 severe
thunderstorm warnings.
Wakefield (se) VA NWS issued 2 flash flood, 3 severe thunderstorm
warnings, and a tornado warning. There were 2 confirmed tornadoes, per
the storm reports (see below).
In addition, the Blacksburg NWS (sw VA) issued a record report.
Wednesday was the warmest morning for July 13th ever recorded. The low
was 67º, up a degree from the previous record from the date in 1972.
The other climo stations (Blacksburg & Roanoke) missed their records by
a degree each.
The flooding in the Baltimore Washington CWA was worst in the Nelson Co
VA area, Fredericksburg VA, and Cumberland MD. I have news links to the
latter two. Searching news outlets nearest Nelson Co (north of
Charlottesville) were unsuccessful late Thurs. afternoon. It also
happened late Wenesday evening.
The thunderstorm coverage today has been much lighter & with a lot less
lightning.
This pattern will continue daily thru the weekend. By next week, with
few t-storms & more sunshine, we should see more temps near 90º. Along
with the continued high Td, we should see some heat advisories posted
(100º threshold) early next week.
