Updated: June 8, 2005 11:49 a.m.
Typhoon Nesat is weakening over the waters of the northern
Philippine Sea. Late Wednesday morning, EDT, Nesat holds top sustained
winds of 75 mph about a center which is 380 miles west-northwest of
Iwo Jima, one of Japan's Volcano Islands; it is moving northeastward
at 12 mph. Nesat is forecast to slowly weaken on a northeastward
heading during the next 2-3 days; therefore, it will likely lose
typhoon status soon. On this projected path, Nesat's core will pass
between the Volcano Islands and "mainland" Japan Thursday.

East Antarctica.

inches within less than 48 hours ended late in the day Wednesday,
local time.
A drenching thunderstorm unloaded 4.5 inches of rain within less

Two-day rainfall ended Wednesday morning, local time, was 7.1
inches at Port Blair on India's South Andaman Island in the eastern
Bay of Bengal.
Monday and Tuesday brought sweltering heat to Lisbon, Portugal's
capital. Highs were 94 and 96 degrees, respectively, on these two days
whereas the average daily high during the first week of June is in the
lower 70s.
Excessive, flooding rains swamped southwestern Alberta, Canada,
from late Sunday to early Wednesday morning. One of the hardest hit
sites was the town of Claresholm where 9.8 inches of rain fell within
60 hours.
Portions of far southeastern China have also been inundated by
torrential rainfall in recent days. In the province of Guangxi and
near the Gulf of Tonkin, for instance, the city of Qinzhou was
drenched by 13.9 inches of rain within about 66 hours ended Wednesday
afternoon, local time.
In the Gulf of Tonkin, meantime, Vietnam's Bach Long Vi island
was doused by heavy rain Monday night to late Wednesday, local time.
