World Weather Summary
Updated: May 3, 2005 9:49 a.m.
Tuesday was even colder than usual at Russia's Vostok base on the
ice cap of East Antarctica. The high of -101 degrees was fully 25
degrees below average for early May. The low was -104 degrees, or
about 15 degrees below average.
Meanwhile, a fierce blizzard raged on East Antarctica's Prince
Olav Coast Tuesday. At Syowa, a Japanese outpost, sustained winds
increased from about 35 mph early in the day to nearly 75 mph late.
The howling winds combined with heavy snow to produce blinding
white-outs with temperatures in the upper 10s and lower 20s.
A heat wave which commenced late last week in Hanoi, Vietnam, was
halted, at least temporarily, by a sudden, drenching thunderstorm late
Tuesday, local time. Consecutive highs beginning Friday and ending
Tuesday were 97, 98, 100, 96 and 97 degrees in this capital city
whereas average daily highs during this stretch are in the middle 80s.
The drenching thunderstorm late Tuesday dropped the temperature to 70
degrees; it had not been this cool since April 16th. More importantly,
the thunderstorm unloaded 4.0 inches of rain within about 2.5 hours;
this is more rain than would fall, on average, during all of May --
the monthly mean is 3.7 inches.
Monday, heavy thunderstorms pelted Calcutta, India, with 4.1
inches of rain, or about 85% of the average rainfall for all of May.
Torrential rains pounded parts of New Zealand's North Island
Tuesday to Tuesday night, local time. Within less than 18 hours, 5.1
inches of rain poured down upon Tauranga while Hicks Bay collected 2.8
inches of rain during the same interval.
Tuesday afternoon, local time, Bangkok, Thailand, suffered through
oppressive heat and humidity. At its highest, the AccuWeather RealFeel
Temperature(tm), an index describing how the weather truly feels, was
133 degrees.
