"Greymouth appears to have a strong claim on the unwanted title of tornado
capital of New Zealand – yesterday's big one wasn't even the first one this
week.

The Insurance Council says claims are likely to hit $10 million for damage
but there was one other claim on an insurance company's books.

Metservice forecaster John Crouch yesterday said the West Coast was
probably the area that got the most tornados because the topography brought
a lot of rain and thunderstorms, which along with the effect of the
Southern Alps were a recipe for tornados. "

"A powerful tornado tore through a town on New Zealand's west coast,
tearing roofs off buildings and tossing shipping containers through the
air. At least six people were injured, no deaths are reported.

The tornado ripped through Greymouth and its neighboring Blaketown suburb
on Thursday, leaving a trail of debris about 400 meters (1,300 feet) wide
and four kilometers (2.5 miles) long, local officials said."
