Tropical Cyclone Ingrid has landed on the eastern Cape York
Peninsula of Queensland, Australia. Late Wednesday afternoon, EST, the
eye of Ingrid is inland about 30 miles south-southeast of Lockhart
River, Queensland. Drifting towards the west-northwest at 8 mph,
Ingrid still owns highest sustained winds near 115 mph. Ingrid is
forecast to move westwards across the Cape York Peninsula and to
emerge over the Gulf of Carpentaria by midmorning Thursday, EST.

Meantime, Tropical Cyclone Willy has sprung to life off
northwestern Australia. Late Wednesday afternoon, EST, Willy is over
the Indian Ocean about 415 miles northwest of Broome, Western
Australia, Australia, and 325 miles southwest of Waingapu, Sumba
Island, Indonesia. Moving towards the west-northwest at 4-5 mph, the
cyclone has highest sustained winds of 40 mph. Willy is forecast to
strengthen meaningfully, but to also stay over open seas during the
next 48 hours.

Excessive heat Tuesday spread over a substantial part of the
South American midcontinent. It was the third-straight day of
100-degree heat over northern Argentina, much of Paraguay and the
southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Santa Maria, Brasil, set
consecutive highs of 101, 101 and 102 degrees versus an average daily
high of 83 degrees. Farther south, thunderstorms powered by a cold
front cooled stretches of Uruguay and Argentina that had sweltered
Sunday and Monday. At Salto, Uruguay, Monday`s high was 103 degrees;
Tuesday halted at 73.

As of Wednesday, at least another 4.0 inches of rain pelted
Surigao, Mindanao, Philippines, boosting rainfall since Sunday to more
than 13 inches.

A severe storm pounded eastern Canada Tuesday into Wednesday. In
much of the area from Nova Scotia north to the north shore of eastern
Quebec, the storm brought dramatic warming with snow, sleet and ice
yielding to slashing rain, some of it torrential. In the area of the
Mingan Islands north of Anticosti Island, QB, snow, ice and rain were
equivalent to 3.0 inches within 24 hours, and warming hoist the
temperature from near zero to almost 40 degrees within 24 to 30 hours.
Winds above 60 mph were clocked on Anticosti. Farther west, the storm
brought mostly snow. New snowfall in western New Brunswick boosted
snow depth to 57 inches at Saint Leonard, across the Saint John River
from Van Buren, ME. Before the storm set in, snow depth was 32 inches.
On Ile Rouge (Red Island), in the Saint Lawrence estuary of Quebec,
bitterly cold gales early Wednesday were punctuated by gusts above 65
mph.

It's been windier than usual at Vostok, a Russian outpost on the
lofty ice cap of East Antarctica. Wednesday and Wednesday night, local
time, winds blowing 15-25 mph at temperatures in the -40s and -50s
whipped snow from the ground into the air, thereby cutting visibility
to about one-half of a mile. Early Tuesday, the combination of wind
and cold produced a wind chill reading of -111 degrees.
